Discharge from the vagina can be a normal part of a woman’s physiology. What is typical or normal for your body is going to be different from someone else. There are multiple factors that can cause a normal change in vaginal discharge. The main reason being where you are in your menstrual cycle.

Beyond the normal fluctuations in discharge if you notice a change frequency, color, odor and texture of discharge this is a potential indication that you need to seek medical attention. Also if you are pregnant or trying to get pregnant with new discharge this is a good reason to see a medical professional. Abdominal pain, fever, vomiting, rash, unexpected vaginal bleeding and rectal pain are the other main symptoms that should prompt a visit with your medical provider or visit to the Emergency Department.

 

DISCHARGE 101

  • Pathology: Bacterial vaginosis is caused by a bacteria called Gardnerella vaginalis. This bacteria normally lives in your vagina but changes in pH can cause an excess amount to grow.

    Symptoms: Grey colored discharge with a fishy odor.

    Treatment: Antibiotic: Metronidazole (prescription)

  • Pathology: Bacterial infections that are transmitted sexually. These bacteria can cause infection of the vaginal, cervix, and a more serious infection of the fallopian tubes and pelvis. Infection in the pelvis is cause pelvic inflammatory disease, a leading cause of infertility in American women.

    Symptoms: Yellow to green vaginal discharge sometimes associated with pelvic pain and discomfort when you pee.

    Treatment: Antibiotic: Ceftriaxone and Azithromycin.

  • Pathology: Trichomonas vaginalis is a sexually transmitted parasite. The most common STD world wide.

    Symptoms: Clear watery discharge, possible foul odor, and increase in urge to pee and discomfort when you pee. Vaginal itchiness.

    Treatment: Antibiotic: Metronidazole (prescription)

  • Pathology: Candida is a yeast that naturally grows in the vagina. With changes in pH it can overgrow causing the symptoms of a yeast infection.

    Symptoms: White discharge and vaginal itching.

    Treatment: Antifungal Fluconazole.
