Are laser treatments safe for darker skin?
Laser treatments can be incredibly effective to even and clear skin tone.
BUT, this is what you need to know to keep your skin safe.
Which laser treatments are recommended for skin of color?
Laser devices work by sending a particular wave length of light into the skin. The beam of light targets a specific component within the skin which include water, protein, pigment (melanin), hair follicle, and red blood cells. For example, if you have hyperpigmentation or dark spots, the laser would target melanin causing it to dissolve and fade. The type of laser treatment you need is determined by your skin concerns. Lasers are particularly useful as they target a specific component without damaging the surrounding structures.
Can laser treatments cause hyperpigmentation in darker skin?

Which lasers are recommended by dermatologist for skin of color?
When choosing a laser that is safe for your skin there are two words you need to look for:
- Non ablative, this type of resurfacing laser bypasses the top layer of skin and works on deeper layers it is less invasive with less downtime. By bypassing the top layer this laser is less likely to cause additional hyperpigmentation.
- Fractional, this type of resurfacing laser targets a “fraction” of the skin surface.
Non ablative fractional lasers that target pigment are going to be the safest for skin of color and most effective for fading dark spots.
